Every Monday night, the fluorescent lights of a NYC community flicker on, not for another school event, but for something more profound. A group of high school students, led by Kirk Foote, gather for The Grace and Mercy Foundation's weekly Public Reading of Scripture (PRS). These teens aren't just checking a box; they're showing up week after week, rain or shine, to delve into the Bible with dedication and...dare we say it...enjoyment?
Joleen, an 11th grader from the South Bronx, initially had reservations. "I figured it'd be just me and the Bible," she admits. "Honestly, it sounded kind of boring." But as the weeks went by, something shifted. "The Bible started to come alive," Joleen says, her eyes sparkling. "I realized I actually like reading it now, and my faith feels deeper than ever."
This isn't just Joleen's story. The Monday night PRS is a vibrant space where teens meet together, share a meal, and discover the Bible in a fresh light. It's a testament to the power of community and shared exploration, proving that faith can be anything but boring, especially when it's shared with others.
For Samuel, a newcomer to the group, the experience has been transformative. "Honestly my first experience, I really liked it," he shares. "Beforehand, I've never read the Bible. But listening to it, it's easier for you to take in information than just reading it. I think God's Word does change a person. Because after you find His Word, you find Him." Samuel's journey reflects the diverse perspectives within the PRS group. Whether you're a seasoned reader or a curious newcomer, the Monday night gathering offers a welcoming space to discover the transformative power of scripture.
